Topic Sinemet causing stomach/bowel pain? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By happygranny On 2009.02.07 23:39
When my husband first started taking sinemet 2 1/2 months ago he was taking it with small amounts of food: crackers, canned fruit... to avoid nausea. After 6 weeks and increase in dosage he was experiencing no nausea so he stopped worrying about having food with his dose.

His dose is now up to 3 100/25 a day and one 200/50 CR at night.

He has very difficult to treat constipation and had that for months prior to Dx of PD end of November 08.

He also has burning stomach (acid reflux)with bloated bowels and is very uncomfortable. When in the hospital the past week for constipation and suspect bowel obstruction, he was given Citro Mag which must have irritated his digestive system.

Since coming home he has had one night of 2 Sennekot and 2 glasses of GoLytely, (didn't cause a bowel movement) the next night of 2 Sennekot and 3 TBSP Milk of Magnesia (no Bowel Movement) and last night 1/2 bottle of Citro Mag
Which cleaned him out but was so aggressive and he was miserable.

I wonder if his bowel distress is caused by Sinement or what ever is causing his constipation, and now exacerbated by the Citro Mag?

Over the months as we try to learn how to deal with his constipation we have tried just about everything natural including coconut oil.

I read that in rare cases stomach distress can be caused by Sinemet. Has anyone heard of that personally?

He is so uncomfortable/miserable and I don't know what to do to help him.

When rereading this message I think it is confusing. There are 2 problems: his constipation, and the question of whether Sinemet causes bloating and acid reflux
Thanks,

Jeannie

Jeannie, I just looked it up online, some reported side effects of Sinemet are; abdominal pain, gastrointestinal pain, anxiety, heartburn, back pain, shoulder pain and muscle cramps. Constipation, involuntary movements and nausea also (there are many more but these should help answer a few of your questions). Sorry I don't have the answer as to the exact causes of the problems. It's another case of we're damned if we do and damned if we don't take the medicines. For now all we can do is try to balance the side effects with the effect the medicine has helping with the disease. Trying to find a level We can live with. Take care, best of luck and hang in there.
