My mother's P.D. has been progressing for about 10 years now. She is the strongest and smartest woman I know. Her newest set back is her eyes ... the muscles are tightening up around her eyes, as she thinks and concentrates. They freeze and she can not open her eyes. She can sometimes touch her cheek to trigger one of them open, but at times this does not work. Another suggested botox, so I think I'll ask the neurologist to try that. ... Has anyone else tried the botox for this reason. My mother is 80 years old. She lost her husband, my father, last year after 60 years of marriage, and her daughter, my sister, 5 years prior to cancer. Each emotional "bang" is especially hard on people living with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease. Symptoms and progress seem to surge during times of stress. Of course I am trying to keep her as independent as possible. A motorized wheelchair is out since she can not keep her eyes open now. It is getting very difficult for her. She keeps on going, though ... what a great lady. Thank you for any advice you can share. Joan |

| Welcome to our forum. I think that you will find some wonderful people here. We have all been or are going through most PD issues. We are fortunate to have some PD pts who contribute. |

| Joan: I am one of the patients and have not read or heard of your mom's symptoms but will check through another forum of 3000 PD patients for any mention of the symptom or treatment.. in the meantime my pal Al aka LOHENGRIN may have some insight and will probably pitch in if he can help Bob C |

| Daughterjoan, Welcome to the forum. What you are describing sounds like blepharospasm, forced eyelid closure. Botox can be used to treat this, however there seems to be a consensus that some anti-Parkinson's med's cause this as a side effect. (Specifically levodopa). You might want to run this by Your mom's Neurologist to see if reducing the L-dopa helps. Yes stress can cause havoc with our Parkinson's. I personally have no experience with botox. Again welcome to the forum, take care, best of luck and hang in there. |

Thank you Lohengrin. I was told about the blepharospasm by another lady but she did not tell me about the levodopa. I have discussed it with my mother's neurologist and he had not heard of it, and went on with his day ... suggested talking to the eye doc. Did that and he was not into trying something like that on an 80 year old lady with PD. I appreciate all the help I can get to be prepared when I go back to see the neurologist wih my mother. I hope the lower dose works, and if not we'll try the botox. THANK YOU! Joan |
