I just finished reading Thomas Gradoys book "Life in the Balance". I read it cover to cover in one night. Although it brought back some painful memories it was wonderful hearing how the PD person feels. I woud highly recommend it to anyone that hasn't read it. I plan on giving a copy to my husband's neurologist - he could use the wake up call.

I haven't heard of it, but will search it out. It's probably a good read for other pders so they can be assured they are not alone. Don't forget to include a "sweet" note to the nice Dr. |

annwood, I ordered the book but wanted to know if you think letting my Dad, with Parkinson's Disease, read it would be okay or would it be too much of a reality check and upset him. I am not sure if you recommend this book from a caregiver or patient standpoint. Thank you, Mary

Mary, You would have to be the judge of that. It deals quite a bit with the physician realizing he is developing the disease and later the dementia.

My husband read the book and he has upset him. Most likely due to the denial we both had been in. My husband had been doing very well up to this year. Parkinson's for 18yrs and dementia rearing it's ugly head this summer.

I bought the book and Dad found it and is reading it before me. I haven't read it yet but he said it doesn't upset him and can't put it down. It seems to help Dad to read about others with Parkinson's Disease. He also liked reading the book by Michael J. Fox.

Another good book is Saving Milly by Mort Kondracki.

I plan to read "Life in the Balance". Side note: "Saving Milly" is also a movie. I had the privilege of writing a review of the movie. Please stop by my FaceBook and see the review. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30046465&l=b2b9e&id=1347875495 |

There was a special last year on Good Morning America and a friend told me about it. Good Morning America's medical editor, Dr. Tim Johnson, is a friend of Dr. Graboys, so he basically interviewed Dr. Graboys and talked about the book, Life in the Balance. At that time there was a large excerpt from the book on the GMA websiste, so I printed it and sent it to all of our adult children so they would have an inkling of what their Dad is going thru. We ordered and both read the book. It was wonderful. Joe liked it. It helped me to know how Joe was feeling also. Wonder how Dr. Grayboys is - that has been about a year ago.

I've recently gone back to work and haven't been on in a few weeks, so when catching up on the forum and saw this post, I wanted to comment. I had read Tom Graboys book last summer and mentioned it in one of my earlier posts. It really is a great book. My neighborhood book club (which I had actually dropped out of due to ...everything) read it in order to understand what my husband and I and kids were going through, and as they said, to help provide whatever support they could...they are a great group of women. Anyway, I thought I would share that my husband and I went to hear Tom Graboys speak to a small (30 to 40ish) group at Yale in January. He does quite a few speaking engagements in the New England area (we found out about it from the CT chapter newsletter). He was there along with his wife, and 2 or 3 other panelists. He spoke for awhile with Vickie filling in as necessary. After he and Vickie spoke, the panelists spoke, and they all took questions from the audience. (Someone asked whether he stills drives-we found out that he no longer drives, but they've hired a driver who can take him to his activities). He is quite disabled, but he obviously has incredible drive and determination to be the best he can in spite of things.
