| My husband had an accident today while out. It's his second accident. He has been constipated for most of his life going every 3 days. He took a daily laxative prescribed by his doctor but stopped after his first accident because the diarrhea was so violent he could not get to the bathroom in time. I'm concerned about fecal impaction which I understand can cause diarrhea and constipation. Please advise. |

| Lynn: For what it is worth--constipation is a common side effect of PD and was a fairly significant problem with me until about a year ago when my spouse brought home a colon cleanser purchase at Walmart. More recently my Patient forum group began a thread on PURE VIRGIN HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL, While my caretaker=spouse was only able to find a capsule version in a health food store I have been taking it for several weeks and with 4 capsules daily(sometimrs only 2 ) I have a normal BM daily. | I would like input on what to do in this situation: I am caring for my father. He uses an external catheter device at night. However, he is completely incontinent from the waste down - no control at either end. The makeup of this device he uses has elastic straps around his waste and butt cheeks. This catches the poop big time and then he slides it down his legs and over his socks and, well, there is literally poop EVERYWHERE, on him, his socks, the floor, his hands, legs, etc! It is even in some places it really shouldn't be. So, it is very time consuming getting him cleaned up, the bathroom cleaned up, and the device properly cleaned up for another night's use. I have made it clear to Dad that I do not like this external catheter device because it does not work well with his bowel incontinence. He says it makes him feel better to have it on at night. So, we keep using it. My husband says I should just tell him, no, we will not be using it any more. The time consuming clean up caused by the external catheter usually makes me late for work in the morning. It is something that must have immediate attention. The mess and smell is just too awful to ignore until my lunch break. Dad has tried EVERY type of external catheter known to mankind. However, he is not circumcised, even though he insists he is, and I only have about an inch of flesh to work with and that goes into hiding very easily, so nothing stays on him. Anyway, question is do I just tell Dad we will not be using this device any more or do I suck it up because it makes him feel better. Thank you! Mary |

| Mary. Can't you use diapers or pull-ups on your dad? Then just let him wear the external catheter over the diaper to keep him happy. |

| I agree with the pull ups or diaper but can you clean him before he gets out of bed? |

| As always, thanks for your responses. Dad uses depends and pads to keep him dry. He will not let me put the device on the outside of the depend. Dad's incontinence does not keep him from spending hours in the bathroom where he makes quit a mess trying to take care of things himself. I have told him that it would be easier for both of us if he left things for me but he isn't ready to give up on that end of things. Does anyone know of an external catheter device that works for an uncircumcised male? Thank you, Mary |

| We tried external catheters and had no luck. They would come off during the night either by the force of the urine stream or my husband would pull them off. |

| You can buy virgin coconut oil at most large grocery stores. If you have a Whole Foods Market nearby - they have it. You can also order it from Dr. Mercola online at Mercola.com. I found it at my local Harris Teeter (we are in NC) grocery store last night. It is with the oils. It comes in a jar. This jar was organic extra virgin coconut oil. It is VERY healthy for you. We use it in all of our cooking. |
