Food is one of my mother's last enjoyments, however eating out has become a hassle beause each time we go, she seems interested only in ordering a drink with dinner. She's never been a heavy drinker or problem drinker, just a social drinker, but because at least half of the 10 meds she's on carry alcohol warnings, I've refused to allow it.

Just wondering, though I know not everyone will be on the same meds she is, does anyone ever imbibe and other than the obvious balance issues that might arise, has anyone ever had any issues with mixing alcohol and Parkinson's drugs?

(She's also on Neurontin, Seroquel, Tramadol)

I assume you mean getiing a buzz much quicker? I used to be a brandy manhattan lover, never ate pizza and most other Italian foods without a beer to acccopany the meal.
Since DX I occasionally have a glass of red wine (okd by primary, cardio & neuro) with the usual caveat. Bob

I guess -- I just lined up all the meds and found alcohol warning labels on 7 of her 10. I guess I'm tired of fighting her desire for a drink and if nobody is turning purple and smoking isn't pouring out your ears after a single drink, I'm wondering if it's worth the fight. Her doctors haven't really addressed the issue because I haven't asked. I'm not pro-alcohol myself though I'll have an occasional drink with dinner myself and if she isn't going to be comatose after the first swallow I may have to relent, though I don't relish the idea of carrying my mother out of a restaurant -- and I won't allow it in the house because of the possibilities and probably as a carryover from childhood.

My husband was never a drinker and early on in his PD even a glass of wine would result in nausea because of his meds. The last 2 or 3 yrs he HAD to have a beer everyday, usually at lunch. He had so little else to enjoy and it made him happy. Other than making him sleepy I never saw any adverse effects and almost all of his meds had the alcohol warning. Give it a try at home first, maybe.

On more than one occasion I have given my mom wine to wash the meds down with. It seemed to have no effect, other than the usual that a glass or two of wine will have. Before PD, she like alcohol a lot (maybe too much) but about a year before diagnosis she lost the taste and now only likes the occasional glass or two.

My hubby is taking the usual parkinson drugs with the no alcohol warnings. We have always had an occasional drink - beer or wine with dinner and still do. I guess it doesn't taste good to him anymore because he will want one but will usually only drink a partial glass. I think it is just another way to try to be normal. He would probably be unhappy if I said absolutely none, so if he asks I give him one and then throw half of it out. Doesn't seen to cause any problem.

My Dad looks forward to wine and chocolate after dinner. He has so little to look forward to any more because of this disease that I wouldn't consider limiting either. He knows candy is not good for him and wine will affect his motor skills if he drinks too much but he is 76 and should enjoy what he can at this point. In fact, I usually join him with a glass of wine.

I give my dad a half glass of wine once in a while. He enjoys it and I don't think it makes him significantly sleepier or unsteadier than he already is.

Pearly4:

My wife was diagnosed with Parkinson's about 6 years ago. Her Neurologist felt that having a glass (or two) of wine with dinner was okay. He indicated at the time that any problem "was worth it".

So, if the Neurologist feels that it is okay, why not have a glass of wine.
