Hi,

I am new here. I did a quick search before posting and did not find any posting on ayurveda, so I have started a new topic.

My mother experinced dementia, which would manifest in varying degrees at different times. But we were just devastated when she could not recognize us! She would have hallucinations about being in some other place/city, sometimes from her past. Sometimes she would hallucinate that there are other people in the house. Eventually we consulted an Ayurvedic physician (this is in India) in another city. We are not in a position to travel because of the physical condition of my mother - very weak, very stiff, not to mention the difficulty involving travel here. My mother's sister was taking medicines from this doctor (not for PD) and she suggested that we talk to him. After explaining our situation to him, he said that the problem is due to insufficient blood supply to the brain. Since he had examined my mother's sister, he already knew about her constitution, and he got some idea about my mother's since according to him they are of about the same age and they are sisters. He had a long conversation with us on phone and we conveyed as much information to him as possible and answered all his questions. After this the meds were shipped to us and we started them but discontinued them after about a month because my mother suspected that the 'ghee' (clarified butter) in which the meds had to be taken is causing more than the usual number of visits to the toilet. Although we had noticed that it was not the ghee but the fact that any time she ate spicy food (usually from any takeout) it would cause loose motions, but we were not able to convince her.
Eventually, after a break of a couple of months, we restarted the meds and after about 3 months we started noticing positive changes. After about 5 months or so, the symptoms (not being able to recognize her sons and hallucinations) disappeared completely. She has to still take the medicines, but the good thing is that with ayurvedic meds there are no side effects.

We continue to struggle with the other aspects of PD, but I am grateful for the relief from dementia.

In ayurveda, PD is considered to be caused due to 'vata' and it is treated by herbs and oil massage and steam. When we tried this type of treatment, there was some relief, albeit slow due to her advanced age (79). But we had to eventually discontinue the treatment due to logistical reasons.
