| Have any of your Parkies had a UTI? My dad was hospitalized Sunday and just came home last night. He is worse than I have ever seen him. Shaky and incoherent, can barely walk. I was wondering if any of you have had the same experience and what was the outcome. |

| number1daughter, I can't say that I have so I'll have to defer to those who know firsthand. But as this post brings up hospitals I'll use the chance to remind all that when in hospitals make sure your doctor is specific as to meds times! If they just say take 4x's a day you're going to go 6hrs between doses. If you take it every 4 hours, it's going to mess you up! Most hospitals won't listen to us or caregivers just follow dosing instructions and divide 4 into 24 and give the 6 hour answer. Take care, best of luck and hang in there. |

| My husband had several UTI infections. You can expect this reaction given the effect of the infection on his body, the disorientation from being in the hospital and perhaps the failue to get his meds on time while in the hospital. It will take several weeks for his body to recover. PD pts just don't do well with any type of infection and they have an icreased risk. Good luck. |

| Thanks for your replies. He is still doing poorly. I guess it takes time. He is still on antibiotics so maybe after he takes them all he will do better. He can't do anything as of now. He's difficult to handle. |

| My spouse fell on the 7th in his bathroom and was disoriented and forgot that he had his life alert on. When I finally got to him he had been on the bathroom floor most of the day and could not get up. Unbeknownst to us he had a UTI and this caused his immune system to go down and he slowly became weak and could hardly walk. Before the UTI he was doing so well since we had changed the meds. He was able to drive, eat without his face in his plate, sat up straighter was able to ascend and descend our stairwell without much help. He was doing so well until this set back. He had to get back on the antibiotics this week as he still has the uti. Unfortunately, he is in the wheel chair as he is not able to walk too well. He is able to get in and out of the shower without much assistance and in and out of bed. Just can't walk with cane too far. It will take him another 4 - 6 weeks to recover and be able to walk with his cane unassisted. Seems when things seem to look find and dandy something happens and we have to take 3 steps back. Frustrates me because I am looking to get more rest and some quality time and it's out of reach again. I hate this disease. I try my best to deal with the situations that come up everyday. I'm thankful for this forum that understands what we are going through. |

konagirl, I fully understand what you are going through. It's the same for me, every time I think I can take a deep breath and be more relaxed, it starts all over again. Dad can not even get up out of a chair or bed on his own. Have to watch him every minute. That's all we can do is try our best. I only hope I keep my sanity. |

| number1daughter: My dad is 80 and has had PD for about7 years and has done pretty well. However, about 2 months ago he was diagnosed with a UTI and was prescribed antibiotics. That was on a Monday. By that Thursday he was so weak he couldn't sit up, was incoherent, couldn't speak, hallucinating and terribly confused. He fell when he tried to get out of bed so we had him taken to the hospital. They found that the UTI had progressed into e-coli. The doctors said it is not unusual. They had to try several different antibiotics before one would treat it. After about 3 days he was back to normal. It's worth a trip to the doctor to have it checked. |

| Wow ljrfball, I will sure keep an eye out for all you mentioned. Dad was in the hospital for 4 days, they ran all kinds of tests. If he does not improve soon we will have to check it out again. |

We struggled with my mom's UTI for almost 2 years. It wore her out and it wore us out with all the trips to the bathroom. We went through different antibiotics, which would give temporary relief, but it would invariably return. Drinking a lot of water helped to flush out the infection, but she would not drink water fearing more trips to the bathroom. We kept a diary where we noted down the times she went to the bathroom and the times and quantity of water she drank. We tried to show her the corelation - that the number of trips reduced after drinking enough water, but we could not convince her. Eventually what really provided lasting relief was cranberry juice, and when there is no juice, tablets made from cranberry extract. Other than that taking a homeopathic medicine called Cantheris helped when there was burning sensation. |

autodidact , Dad did recover from the UTI but I'm sure that won't be the last of them. Mother does the same limiting of her water intake for fear of many trips to the bathroom... I'm sure if she drank more during the day her bathroom trips would produce more and ease the bladder pressure. She cannot take any bladder meds because she is even more confused when on them. I'll have to work on her fluid intake during day time hours. |
