My FIL is in the hospital because we think he may have aspirated some of his medications. He has pneumonia but it looks like he is responding to the antibiotics. He had one swallowing test yesterday so they would have the confidence that he could take his meds. He only missed one dose (2am Sinamet) in the process. He is to have another swallowing test today. This same thing happened to him last March. At that time when he was in the hospital, we had him as DNR because several years back he and my husband had a talk and he said that this was what he wanted. We didn't get anything in writing unfortunately. He was furious back the so we had it changed to full code. When we were in the ER this time the nurse asked me if he had any advanced directives. I told her he did not have a living will, and then he looked at me with that mean eagle eye. I told her he was full code and then he was happy again. I don't know what we will do if it ever comes to the point of needing a feeding tube. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there. Doesn't look like we will have to make the decision for now, though. -Jenny |

| What is "full code"? I have never heard this term before, but it doesn't sound good. |

| Sorry, it is the opposite of DNR which is Do Not Resuscitate. Full Code means that you provide full life support be it cardiac or respiratory. |

| Wow, I should have posted more. My FIL had his swallowing test today and he is aspirating when swallowing. They are going to see if they can change his diet and work with his swallowing skills. He is going to be furious when they give him the mechanized diet. We tried that a year ago and he refused to eat. Luckily there is always ice cream. |

I hate to tell you this but ice cream is not allowed on the diet. It creates too much mucous. I am certain he won't like the diet and the thickeners that have to be added to the foods. As you know I refused the feeding tube because I felt it was inhumane and I knew in the past my husband had stated he never wanted one. I wonder if you shouldn't go back and review what your FIL initially stated about the code and also think of what is best for him regarding the feeding tube. This was at a time when he was thinking clearly. Just my thoughts. I wish you the best. |
